Background of the game development As we had our new technology in development we wanted to develop a game where we allowed the players a close to unlimited amount of freedom to travel across the game world. The Caribbean was a perfect setting to show off the Avalanche Engine and combined we had a very attractive foundation for a game.

Fun facts of the game Originally Rico Rodriquez was a tattooed guy with dreadlocks. As the focus testing showed that players wanted a handsome hero rather than the stereotype games hero character, his looks were changed.
The original plot of the game involved a kidnapping of the pope, threat of WMD’s and drug trafficking – all at the same time.
The original game world was 64 x 64 km (10486 square miles).
We deliberately didn’t give Rico much of a persona as we wanted the players to create his/hers own Rico.
There are over 10 million trees on San Esperito.
The game is not based on the US military operation in Panama, labor union contracts or the 1995 movie.
The original idea was to create an over-the-top parody of action movies.
The Xbox 360 version was developed over the course of six months and was approved on the first submission.
