Background of the game development

With the success of Just Cause Eidos Interactive (which was at the time acquired by SCi Interactive) wanted a sequel. Obviously we jumped on the opportunity and the sequel concept phase started in the early fall of 2005. As we started the concept phase we wanted to continue to build on the success of the grappling-hook, the parachute and the true sandbox nature of the game world. Rico’s looks were changed into a more action-hero style and we also decided to give him more persona.

Fun facts of the game

Players have killed over 2.8 billion people in Just Cause 2 since launch. That’s more people than the populations of Europe, Africa, North America and South America combined.

Over 1 billion explosions have rocked Panau island

Players have driven vehicles over 240 million miles (387 million km) around Panau. That’s enough to travel the distance between the Earth and the Sun more than 2.5 times.

Even two years after launching in March 2010, Just Cause 2 is still averaging around 200 000 unique users playing the game every week.

Rico is humming “Ride of the Valkyries” when he’s firing from a helicopter.

Our publisher was acquired twice during the development of the game.

We still think we have developed the best grappling-hook seen in a game and all new grappling-hooks are either 1) cheap copies or 2) tributes to the Just Cause 2 grappling-hook.

In the original intro, Rico was burned-out and had retired to a brothel somewhere in Mexico where he’d spent his days since Just Cause 1 drinking.
